Go Green with Stain Removal

Sooner or later it was bound to happen. Perhaps it was your children, a spilled drink, or your four-legged family member, but now there are stains and perhaps smells on your flooring.

No matter how careful you are accidents happen. Now you’re looking at your floor, feeling frustrated and wondering what now? Well don’t give up just yet. Here are a few tips and tricks to get your flooring looking like it should again using natural ingredients that won’t harm the environment and are likely already handy in your home.

Wine or Beverage Stains: Add two tablespoons of vinegar to one cup of hot water, then add one quarter teaspoon of salt. Stir the mixture. Use a light-colored rag to gently dab and wipe the stain until its gone. This solution is even helpful with red wine, let dry and vacuum the spot to remove any remaining salt or soda.

Four-legged friend had an accident?  Use a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water. Blot the area repeatedly with a paper towel until you have removed as much of the moisture as you can, then apply the 50/50 mix and scrub. Use a shop vac to remove as much liquid as you can and put a fan on the spot to dry it.

Bad Smells: If an area of rug, carpet or other flooring where a stain happened now has an unpleasant odor, sprinkle baking soda directly on the floor and let it sit for a few hours. Baking Soda is very absorbent and does an excellent job of pulling odors out of carpets and other flooring. After allowing time for absorption, vacuum up the baking soda. For surfaces other than carpets, a damp mop may also be needed to clean up all the baking soda.

Above all, use your own good judgement for treating floor stains and odors. If the stain is large or stubborn, you may need to call a professional for help.  If your flooring is aged, worn or damaged you may want to consider replacing it.
