Spring Cleaning: How to Clean All Types of Flooring (& What Products to Use)

You don’t have to bend over backwards or spend your entire day on the ground just to get your floors looking shiny and refreshed. Whether you have traditional hardwood, luxury vinyl tile or planks, or even linoleum, and cork, we are breaking down the easiest and safest ways to keep them clean for spring and beyond!

Laminate
Laminate flooring is quite durable, and a lot can be used to clean it. With that being said, you want to be diligent to not allow water to get underneath. Try dry mopping, vacuuming or spot cleaning with a slightly damp mop when necessary. And remember, never polish a laminate floor!

Luxury Vinyl
Keeping your luxury vinyl planks and luxury vinyl tile looking picture perfect is actually relatively easy. Start by using a soft bristle broom to remove loose dirt. Then mix ¼ cup vinegar with 1 drop of dish soap and warm water. Spray the floor section by section and wipe with a damp microfiber mop throughout the room. You want to avoid using harsh cleaning chemicals on luxury vinyl flooring.

Hardwood
Hardwood floors are typically either finished with polyurethane or wax. To determine what yours is, try rubbing your finger over it and if a smudge appears its waxed. Sealed wood floors typically have a urethane, polyurethane, or polyacrylic coating to protect them from stains and water damage. To clean, mix a ¼ cup of mild or p-H neutral soap with water in a bucket or bowl. Then simply, damp-mop (make sure it is very wrung out), using a dry microfiber cloth to clear any excess moisture. When it comes to cleaning waxed hardwood, just sweep, dust mop or vacuum regularly.

Carpet
Everyone knows keeping your carpets clean starts with vacuuming, but how often and what’s the best technique? Cleaning experts recommend vacuuming slowly back and forth, in repetitive strokes. To properly vacuum a 300 square foot room, it should take approximately 15-20 minutes. This removes dry soil that has made its way into the carpet. Average households should be vacuumed at least twice per week. For a periodic deep clean and to extend the life of your carpet, we recommend a professional carpet cleaning about once a year.
