Affordable and Cozy Home Decor Updates

When you think of special times with love ones, you can’t help but imagine a room filled with family.  food, and festivities.  Creating rooms with a warm ambience for those special places starts with simple and easy ways to update home décor. There’s no better place to start the transformation than with the floor.

Rugs serve as a sign of comfort and can provide a quick and affordable way to change the entire dynamic of a room.  You can leave the existing décor as the theme of the room or change the décor to match your new rug.  Here are 3 things to consider when using rugs as the focal point when updating room décor.

Shape

Circular Rugs: Circles provide the illusion and appeal of contrast to sharp angles of the room and edges of furniture. If you want a whimsical, playful, cozy, or soft touch decor for a smaller room or space, a circular rug may work well.

Square Rugs:  Make sure to select a rug that is slightly smaller than the area covered by the furniture. Squares visually represent enclosed spaces and accentuate the symmetry of angles in the room providing a sense of security and safety.

Rectangular:  Geometric shaped rugs suggest a space is inviting and visually adds length, depending on the layout of the room and size of furniture. Rectangle rugs can be used in rooms with a traditional décor.    Furniture can be placed with the legs partly on the rug as in the picture below.

Size

Large Rugs:   Large rugs are used for many different purposes. They can cover up old and unattractive flooring and protect hardwood. They can make a room softer and quieter for a sense of calm and space.  If the rug colors and patterns are bright, it can add just enough pop appeal to an otherwise muted color scheme and liven up décor you already have on the walls and shelves of the room.

Medium Rugs:  These rugs are intended to accentuate a specific area of your room. Using the rug correctly with your home décor enables you to utilize it as a decorative, eye-catching draw to the room. Medium rugs, also known as accent rugs, work well with sectional furniture by placing the rug and furniture in the center of the floor.  They also work well in rooms with display tables that may have vases or floral arrangements.

Style

If you’re starting with a room that’s already styled with décor you love, try choosing a rug that has at least two colors in your current room or colors that will easily coordinate with them.

If you can design your room from scratch, it’s an open canvas.  You can build your room décor around the rug.  If the rug is neutral in color, you want to start with bold colors for décor accessories and consider using neutrals on the walls in whites, beiges, grays, or taupe to make the dominate color shine throughout your space.

When you are considering rugs keep these three basic things in mind relative to shape, size, and style of the room.

All on: If a rug is big enough, you can put all legs of the furniture on top of the rug.

All Off: If you have a smaller space, you might choose a smaller rug and leave all the feet of the furniture off the rug.

Front On: Putting only the front feet of the furniture on the rug can tie everything together and create a feeling of openness.
