2016 Rug Styles

Hardwood and tile floors are both beautiful and functional, but wide swaths of bare surfaces can leave your space feeling unwelcoming and cold. The strategic placement of rugs provides a finishing touch – defining living areas, reducing noise, and adding warmth to your flooring. We’re seeing some exciting shifts in the popularity of certain colors, patterns, and textures, with the following trends really taking off this year:

Colors

The hottest colors right now are rich, deep, organic, and inspired by nature. These include indigo, deep green, gold, dark brown, and purple. Restful, shaded neutrals provide contrast, and they are an excellent foundation for layering in colors, textures, and patterns. Sparkle rugs with intertwined metallic threads of silver, gold, and other metals are the latest trend. These threads can be included in just about any rug – regardless of material or style – bringing a shimmering glow to your home.

Patterns

Patterns have generally become more understated this year, featuring abstract, organic designs. While you can still find rugs with geometric and graphic designs, the trend is toward a blurry, painterly appearance. For a bolder look, bring the outside in with rugs featuring floral patterned designs and wild green colors. We’re expecting this growing trend to include all rug types and textures – even spilling over into other forms of interior design. This is a great development for those with a green thumb and a penchant for house plants!

Textures

Contrasting textures add interest to a room. Shaggy rugs – all the rage during the 60s and 70s – are starting to make a comeback in 2016. They offer a wide range of colors, materials, and weights to choose from, tempting you to kick off your shoes and get cozy. Retro comfort and luxury – now that’s groovy! Silk and wool rugs that have been knotted and tufted by hand also offer comfort and depth, with many different styles to choose from. Combining materials – such as leather, silk, and wool – into a single piece creates a richer, more diverse look.

As the popularity of hard flooring surfaces continues to grow, we expect the importance of rugs to only increase, becoming a central component of popular floor fashions.
